Yours, Mine, and Ours: Literacy in the Summertime
June 24, 2010
Hosted by Anne Cobb
The typical cry of our students exiting the building on the last day of school might be: “No more school, no more books!” While many educators might count themselves among those making the same end-of-year cry, we know that with the incredible gains they’ve achieved, our students need to avoid the summer slump in literacy. The research is clear. When students return to us in the fall, we often see decreases in fluency, comprehension and vocabulary. We spend the early weeks of school trying to reclaim, reinvigorate and reeducate our students just to get them back to the achievement levels they’d realized last school year. Let’s talk great titles, effective strategies, and authentic discourse for teachers and students alike.

The rub comes with the HOW of it. How do I organize a classroom where these diverse learners can all LEARN? Classroom structures, communications, and responsibility for learning provide effective tools for differentiating the learning environment.

What will that class discussion look like? Research shows that when asked to read chapters in their content area textbooks, students focus primarily on linear text. Learn strategies that will not only give your students better access to the text, but have them forming their own questions as they engage with the study of your content area. From building background knowledge to creating advanced projects, watch your students become scientists, mathematicians, and historians through best-practice literacy strategies.
